Thailand Road Trip Guide 2026–2027: 10 Best Holiday Drives from Bangkok & Where to Rent a Car
The best holiday road trips in Thailand start in Bangkok: Pattaya and Hua Hin for beaches, Khao Yai for cool mountain air, Kanchanaburi and Ayutthaya for history, and fly-and-drive escapes to Chiang Mai, Phuket and Koh Samui. Prime Cars Rental — Bangkok’s luxury car rental company since 2014 — delivers self-drive and chauffeur-driven cars from its own fleet of 60+ vehicles. Peak season sells out: book New Year and Songkran cars 6–8 weeks ahead.
If you have a long weekend and a car, Thailand is one of the most rewarding countries in Asia to explore by road. Highways out of Bangkok are modern, fuel is easy to find, and within two to three hours you can be on a beach, in a national park or among UNESCO-listed ruins. The cool, dry season from November to February is the best time for almost every route, and it is also the season when demand for rental cars peaks.
Peak-season warning: Thailand’s long holidays empty Bangkok all at once. During New Year (31 Dec 2026 – 3 Jan 2027) and Songkran (13–15 Apr 2027), seven-seat vans, convertibles and supercars are typically the first vehicles to be fully booked across the whole market. A rental company with an owned fleet cannot “find another car” once its own cars are committed — so the only reliable strategy is to reserve early.
While much of the northern hemisphere sits under grey skies at 0°C, Thailand’s cool season brings warm, dry, sunny days of around 25–32°C, low humidity, cooler evenings and almost no rain. It is warm enough for the beach and gentle enough for a full day of sightseeing — the most comfortable weather of the Thai year, and the reason November to February is peak season.
| Region (Dec–Jan) | Typical day / night | What it feels like |
|---|---|---|
| Bangkok, Ayutthaya | ≈31°C / 22°C | Sunny and dry, pleasant evenings for rooftop dinners |
| Pattaya, Hua Hin, Rayong | ≈30°C / 23°C | Calm sea, sea breeze, perfect for an open-top drive |
| Khao Yai | ≈27°C / 16°C | Fresh mornings, light jacket at night, vineyard season |
| Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai | ≈28°C / 15°C | Crisp mountain air, misty sunrises on the peaks |
| Phuket, Krabi, Koh Samui | ≈31°C / 24°C | Clear water and calm Andaman seas; Samui dries out from late Dec |

In a year when war and uncertainty fill the headlines in several parts of the world, Thailand remains open, calm and easy to travel — a long-established destination with tens of millions of international visitors a year, modern hospitals, excellent highways and visa-exempt entry for many nationalities. Every route in this guide runs through central Thailand, the eastern coast, the north or the islands, far from the country’s remote border areas. As with any trip, check your own government’s travel advisory before you go.
A street-food lunch costs around 50–100 baht, a one-hour Thai massage typically 300–500 baht, and five-star resorts often cost a fraction of their equivalents in Europe, Japan or Australia. The money you save on everything else is what makes a Bentley on the coast road or a Porsche in the mountains realistic.
Tours run on someone else’s timetable. With your own car you stop at the viewpoint nobody else found, stay for sunset, and change plans on a whim. Split between a group it is also economical: a seven-seat Toyota Alphard at ฿15,000 a day works out to about ฿2,500 per person for six travellers — door to door, luggage included.
Thailand’s high season for international visitors runs from November to April, and it overlaps with the biggest Thai public holidays. That double demand — foreign tourists plus Bangkok residents leaving the city — is what makes rental cars scarce. The table below shows the 2026–2027 dates we plan around and how far ahead we recommend booking.
| Holiday | Dates | Demand for cars | Book by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loy Krathong & Yi Peng | ≈24–25 Nov 2026 (full moon) | Very high in Chiang Mai, Sukhothai, Bangkok riverside | 4–6 weeks ahead |
| King Bhumibol Memorial Day / Father’s Day | Sat 5 Dec 2026 (long weekend) | High — Khao Yai, Hua Hin, Kanchanaburi | 4 weeks ahead |
| Constitution Day | Thu 10 Dec 2026 | Medium — many take Friday off for a 4-day trip | 3–4 weeks ahead |
| Christmas | 24–26 Dec 2026 | Very high — international visitors, Phuket, Samui | 6–8 weeks ahead |
| New Year | Thu 31 Dec 2026 – Sun 3 Jan 2027 | Highest of the year — every route, every car class | 8 weeks ahead |
| Chinese New Year | Sat 6 Feb 2027 | Very high — Bangkok Chinatown, Pattaya, Phuket | 6 weeks ahead |
| Songkran (Thai New Year) | Tue 13 – Thu 15 Apr 2027 | Very high — mass exodus from Bangkok | 6–8 weeks ahead |
Festival dates that follow the lunar calendar (Loy Krathong, Yi Peng) are announced officially each year; check local announcements before finalising plans. Public-holiday substitution days may extend some weekends.
Each route below lists the distance from central Bangkok, a realistic driving time outside rush hour, who it suits best, and the cars from our fleet that fit it. Driving times can double on the first morning of a long weekend — leaving before 7 a.m. is the single best tip for every route.

The easiest beach escape from Bangkok is also the busiest over every long weekend. Motorway 7 is fast and well-surfaced, so a convertible makes sense here: drop the roof on the coastal road between Bang Saen and Sattahip, stop for seafood at Bang Saen, then watch the sunset from the Pattaya viewpoint at Phra Tamnak Hill. Pattaya’s own beach road is slow at night, so plan parking with your hotel before you arrive.

Hua Hin has been Thailand’s royal seaside retreat for almost a century, and it is the calmest of the beach towns within driving range. The route along Rama II Road is congested on the first morning of a long weekend, so leave Bangkok before 7 a.m. or after 8 p.m. A quiet, long-range sedan or a van with reclining captain’s chairs is the right tool here — the drive is long, flat and straight. Add Cicada Market on a weekend evening and a golf round at one of the many championship courses.

Between November and February the mornings in Khao Yai drop to the mid-teens Celsius, which is exactly why Bangkok empties into it on every December holiday. Khao Yai National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage forest complex; the surrounding Pak Chong hills hold wineries, farm cafés and design hotels. Roads inside the park climb and wind, and the hotel driveways are often gravel, so an SUV with ground clearance is far more comfortable than a low sports car.

Kanchanaburi combines Second World War history — the Bridge on the River Kwai and the Death Railway — with the turquoise seven-tier Erawan waterfall and floating raft resorts. The drive west is straightforward, but the attractions are spread out, so you will cover a lot of kilometres in a weekend. A seven-seat SUV keeps everyone comfortable and handles the occasional rough access road to the falls.

Rayong is where Thai families go when Pattaya is full. Park at Ban Phe pier and take the short boat to Koh Samet, or stay on the mainland for the long beaches at Mae Ramphueng and the fruit orchards that run inland. Because you will leave the car at the pier for a night or two, choose a rental company that can collect or secure it for you.

The former Siamese capital is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the best day trip from Bangkok when you only have one free day. Temples such as Wat Mahathat, Wat Chaiwatthanaram and Wat Phra Si Sanphet are a short drive apart, but parking near each is limited, so many guests book a car with a chauffeur and let the driver handle stops. Go early — by 11 a.m. in holiday weeks the main sites are crowded.

Chiang Mai is the north’s cultural capital, and the cool season from November to February is its finest. Most travellers fly and have a car waiting at the hotel, then drive the curves of Doi Suthep, Doi Inthanon (Thailand’s highest peak) or the Mae Rim valley. Yi Peng, the northern lantern festival, falls on the same full moon as Loy Krathong — expected around 24–25 November 2026 — and Chiang Mai hotels fill months ahead.

From Chiang Rai you can visit the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), the Blue Temple and the tea plantations of Doi Mae Salong, then drive north to the Golden Triangle where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet on the Mekong. Distances between sights are long, roads are mountainous, and evenings are cold in December — again, an SUV is the sensible choice.

The Andaman coast is at its best from November to April, which is exactly why it is Thailand’s most expensive and most crowded region over Christmas and New Year. Phuket’s west-coast road from Patong to Kata and Promthep Cape is one of the great short drives in Asia, and Krabi’s limestone karsts around Ao Nang are spectacular from the coastal road. Book cars together with your villa — not after you land.

Samui’s ring road loops the whole island in roughly 50 kilometres, so a car is the easiest way to move between hillside villas, Chaweng, Lamai and Fisherman’s Village in Bophut. The island’s peak runs from late December to April. Because cars reach Samui by ferry, availability is limited and requests should be made well before arrival.

If you are driving your own car to Khao Yai, Hua Hin or the north this season, long highway trips mean stone chips, insect acid and gravel driveways. Our sister company Primus Protection Film in Bangkok installs paint protection film (PPF) and ceramic coatings — the same protection every Prime Cars Rental vehicle carries. Pre-holiday appointments fill up just like rental cars, so book in November or early December: Primus Protection Film — PPF in Bangkok.
December and January are the heart of Thailand’s cool season: sunny, dry days of roughly 30–32°C in Bangkok and on the beaches, low humidity, and nights around 22–24°C. In Khao Yai, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai nights drop to about 14–16°C. It is warm but not too hot for visitors from Europe, North America or East Asia, and it is the most popular time of year to travel.
Thailand remains open and welcoming to international visitors, with modern hospitals, good highways and visa-exempt entry for many nationalities. The popular holiday routes — Bangkok, Pattaya, Hua Hin, Khao Yai, Kanchanaburi, Ayutthaya, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui — are far from the country’s remote border areas. Travellers should always check their own government’s current travel advisory before departure.
Compared with Europe, Japan or Australia, Thailand is very good value: street-food meals cost around 50–100 baht, a one-hour Thai massage typically 300–500 baht, and five-star resorts often cost a fraction of their equivalents elsewhere. Sharing a rental car also cuts costs — a seven-seat Toyota Alphard at 15,000 baht a day is about 2,500 baht per person for six travellers.
The ten most popular road trips from Bangkok are Pattaya (about 150 km), Hua Hin (200 km), Khao Yai (180 km), Kanchanaburi (130 km), Rayong and Koh Samet (200 km) and Ayutthaya (80 km), plus fly-and-drive trips to Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui. Khao Yai and the north are best in the cool season (November–February); the Andaman coast is best from November to April.
Prime Cars Rental in Bangkok has operated since 2014 and runs a fleet of more than 60 luxury cars, SUVs, vans and supercars that it owns outright, with free delivery anywhere in Bangkok, intercity delivery to Pattaya, Hua Hin, Phuket, Chiang Mai and Koh Samui, and a multilingual team available 24/7 on LINE and WhatsApp.
