Most people know M cars such as the M2, M3, M4 and M5. They are genuine factory M cars, but each one begins life as a regular BMW (2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series) that BMW M then transforms. The XM did not start that way. There is no “normal” XM underneath. It was conceived as an M car from day one.
In the history of BMW M, only one other car was created as a dedicated M model: the legendary BMW M1 of 1978, a mid-engined supercar. More than four decades later, BMW M did it again with the XM, launched in 2022 to celebrate 50 years of BMW M. That is why the XM wears two BMW roundels engraved at the edge of its rear window — a direct tribute to the twin roundels on the back of the M1.

The octagonal kidney grille, split headlights, shoulder stripe and vertically stacked hexagonal exhausts are all meant to make the XM look like nothing else on the road. The outcome is one of the most controversial and most eye-catching BMWs ever made — and one of the most requested test drives in our fleet.
Our XM is the Shadow Line version: white paint contrasted with high-gloss black window surrounds, grille frame and body details, plus an M-style stripe that runs along the flanks from the headlights towards the rear doors. The black-and-white contrast makes the XM look even more aggressive, especially under city lights at night.
Say “hybrid” and most people think of fuel economy. In the XM 50e, BMW M added the electric motor primarily for performance.
